Sycamore Tree Project® Training in Swaziland

On 11 and 12 November, PF Swaziland hosted a STP training seminar for volunteers, church leaders and magistrates. The two-day seminar, conducted by a team from PF South Africa, provided an overview of restorative justice, an introduction to the issues related to implementation, and an explanation of the STP sessions.

Douw facilitatingThrough this training, PF Swaziland developed a strategic plan for programme implementation and appointed a team to begin the work. The ministry also received support from the Judiciary to fund the event.

This training was to take place under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between PFI and the International Prison Chaplain’s Association (IPCA)-Africa meant to promote the implementation of STP. Growing out of the mutually-beneficial partnership between the Chaplaincy of the South African Department of Correctional Services and PF South Africa, the MOU sets out guidelines for the provision of STP training in countries where PF national ministries have agreed to the use or implementation of the programme. IPCA-Africa will provide trainers from the experienced team of PF South Africa. The local national ministry is responsible for organizing the training venue, meals and lodging for the trainers, and other local costs. Plans are currently being discussed to provide training for other African national ministries.
