Alternative to School Expulsion and Juvenile Incarceration
PF South Africa announces the launching of the pilot phase of a juvenile support and development programme, The Fig Tree Project. The project targets teenagers who have either been in conflict, or are at risk of being in conflict, with the law. In partnership with the local churches and community, PF South Africa aims to provide struggling youth an opportunity to change their path and reintegrate into school or the workforce.
Through focus on the “total person,” Project Fig Tree works toward participants developing a moral compass as well as the confidence to live up to their full potential. Substance abuse, conflict resolution, and rehabilitation courses have been designed to instill self-confidence and self-worth; skills development is being emphasized to help with employment; and, reconciliation programmes are being employed so youth will understand the impact of their crimes, the importance of taking responsibility, and the need for restitution.
Instead of the community sending deviant youth out of sight, The Fig Tree Project keeps youth in the local community and surrounds them with love and hope. Equipped with life skills and mentoring relationships, these youth are being given a chance to make positive contributions to their families and communities.
PF South Africa's Fig Tree Project will be housed in what is known as "the Potter's House" (pictured left). This facility will accomodate 500 children per year, who will attend programmes that address such issues as substance abuse and relationship development.
