Equipped to Work
Ex-prisoners are working and prisoners are working out thanks to two new projects implemented by PF in The Gambia.
Recently, PF in The Gambia donated sports equipment, including table tennis, basketballs, volleyballs, and an exercise bike, to the Mile Two Central Prisons in Banjul. The Deputy Director of The Gambia Prison Service said, “This gesture has come at a good time to help prisoners and those who look after them become mentally and physically fit.” The German Embassy provided PF with the funds for the equipment. Anita Martin, a representative for the Embassy, noted that the donation should improve prison conditions since exercise, “can relieve stress and lead to a more balanced lifestyle as sport offers not only relief but it's also a proven panacea for anger.” PF Board Chairperson Bernard Mendy said the equipment should allow prisoners to “keep fit” and he added, “We also have some books which will keep prisoners mentally engaged.”
Also this year, The Gambia implemented a street cleaning project that provides employment opportunities for ex-prisoners and their families. Ex-prisoners earn money collecting garbage and cleaning the streets, while contributing in a positive way to the community. PF chose this work-project because it required very little capital or training. PF held a project inauguration ceremony in June, where the Deputy Mayor praised PF for providing this timely service.
