In Sickness and In Health
Medical care for prisoners is usually minimal, and in some prisons not available at all. PF brings medical aid to prisoners around the world.
Volunteer doctors and nurses treated more than 5,000 sick and injured prisoners in the latter part of 2010 thanks to Prison Fellowship Global Assistance Projects organised in Jamaica, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Cameroon. In Uganda, the Humedica medical team, from Germany, treated prisoners in five prisons. Inmates in the Jinja Main Prison sang worship songs for the doctors upon their arrival. Following the performance, one of the doctors commended the singers for displaying such joy despite their physical suffering. He reminded them that while he could treat their medical ailments, he did “not have tablets for spiritual diseases,” for that, he said he would recommend Jesus Christ, “who has the treatment for spiritual sickness.”
Jamaica (CMDA): 700 prisoners treated
Zimbabwe (Humedica): 1332 prisoners treated
Uganda (Humedica): 1889 prisoners treated
Cameroon (Humedica): 1500 prisoners treated
Total Prisoners Treated: 5421
