Waiting for Shelter
PF Zambia built a shelter for relatives of prisoners who must stand outside before admittance into the prison.
Visiting a friend or relative in a prison in Zambia is not easy. The prisons are often in remote locations far from the visitor’s home. Once visitors arrive, they must wait their turn to enter the prison, and waiting outside in the blazing sun or heavy rain can be difficult, especially for children and the elderly.
A visit from a loved one is essential to the emotional health of inmates, but the support of family and friends can mean the difference between staying out of prison and committing more crimes after release. So PF Zambia is making it easier for people visiting the Chingola Central Remand Prison by building a shelter in front of the prison grounds.
PF raised funds for the materials, and volunteers helped erect the pillars and installed the roof for the shelter. Thanks to their compassion, fathers, mothers, children, and friends are more likely to visit their loved ones in prison and keep coming back.
