Encouraging Fathers

by estreet last modified 2007-11-30 04:01

When a father is sent to prison, his absence in the family can have a devastating impact on his children, putting them at greater risk for crime themselves. PF Trinidad and Tobago are helping to bridge the gap between incarcerated fathers and their sons.

It’s hard to be a good father when you rarely see your children.  That’s often a problem for prisoners who are separated from their children.  In such situations, fathers may become less involved in the lives of their family.

PF Trinidad and Tobago recently addressed this problem by hosting a special day for fathers serving time at the Maximum Security Prison, Golden Grove, Arouca.  Eighty fathers had the chance to spend several hours with their families in a relaxed atmosphere.  One of the inmates noted that the last time he saw his daughter he had to read her school report-card through the glass wall in the visiting room and that had been over a year ago.  The Prison Commissioner spoke at the event, urging the inmates to take their roles as fathers seriously, saying that by doing so they would be helping the larger community of Trinidad and Tobago as well as their own families.
